Reading a Hong Kong tax year against exchange UTC stamps

Aligning exchange timestamps with the Hong Kong tax year when preparing a crypto tax gain estimate.

Exchange CSVs almost always stamp in UTC. Hong Kong local time sits eight hours ahead. A trade at 20:00 on 31 March UTC still falls inside the previous Hong Kong calendar day — and for clients who think in tax-year boundaries, that edge matters.

What we do in practice

We convert timestamps to Hong Kong time before filtering the year under review. Smart Crypto Calculator PC then sees only the lots and disposals that belong inside the agreed window.

Edge cases worth flagging

  • Futures funding payments that post after midnight UTC
  • OTC desk fills confirmed by email with a local date but no time
  • Staking reward credits that appear in batches the next morning

Bring those anomalies in your notes when you request an estimate. A five-line email saves a round of revisions.
